During his tenure at Wylie, the Pirates went 123-41-2 including 10 outright district championships.  The Pirates won the 1977 State title and were runner-up in 1978.

Shaffer was inducted into Sigma Pi Sigma, National Physics Honor Society, while a student at Purdue University and again as a faculty member at Austin College.  He was also inducted into the Austin College Hall of Honor in 1989  and the Rockwall ISD Hall of Honor in 2013 and the Fannin County Hall of Fame in 2018.
